What makes an effective speaker?

I am off to class for 8 hours with Alex. We ended last class with this exercise:

My chosen speaker is Benjamin Zander, conductor and speaker extraordinaire. Who inspires you to be a better speaker?

The class chose speakers from a variety of fields and historical periods: from Mother Teresa and Billy Mays, to Hitler and Dave Chapelle. Here is a Wordle of their chosen qualities.

We will then choose 10 qualities as a class. These should be the qualities that matter most to us as a class and that we want to work to embody and channel in our own presentations. The list is different each month!  What qualities do you look for in determining the effectiveness of a speaker?
