Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn has written one of my new favorite books and produced two decks that have absolutely inspired me as we move into the second half of the new year. The Start Up of You explains how an entrepreneurial spirit and approach can help all professionals (even us teachers) grow and develop.

His second deck, “The Three Secrets of Highly Successful Graduates”, is a must share (and view) from teachers to students. It’s also inspired me to add a few bits of Hoffman insight to my latest deck, “Tweak Your Resume”. Check out the deck below:

    I like the little people but I think ithe slide is a tiny bit confusing as it is trying to say two things at the same time. One is that there are a lot of people unemployed in the US and secondly, that every unemployed person is competing against all the other unemployed people.
    Showing the 12 million unemployed as a percentage of the total population actually diminishes the impact of there being so many people unemployed as visually it looks like quite a small percentage of the whole.
    Secondly, if you are competing with 12 million people, the rest of the people (who are emplyed) don’t really matter in the scheme of things.
    Also, when you are competing for work, you are not just competing against other unemployed people, but against anyone who is looking for work in the same field. (So not really 12 million people in all likelihood).
    I agree with your mantra of one idea per slide so I would maybe think about separating out some of your ideas.

    • Margaret, I have thought on this for the past week or so and have made more changes to that portion of the slideshow. I am still not pleased where it is going (it may end up being nixed, as it’s really only a minute portion of the deck/I can communicate the importance of competitive advantage another way–perhaps through something visualizing time or the length of time the average job search is?), but I truly appreciate your feedback and input!
